If I Were Commissoner: Major League Baseball

This new shrot but fun series will conquer one, simple question. What would major pro sports look like if I ran the league. There would certainly be changes in all the sports and some of the more drastic than others. Today, we start in baseball, where many of the changes are off the field. Alas, I have five things that I would make changes to.

1. No more luxery tax, imploy a hard salary cap AND salary floor. Balance revenue sharing

This will not only balance the spending power in the major leagues evenly but FINALLY put emphasis on the draft again. No longer would the Yankees and Red Sox be able to buy championships. This would be very difficult to past by the players' union, but it's a necessity for baseball's future.

2. Expand to 32 teams and realignment.

32 teams is a nice round number and with the new economic system in place, it would become more feasible. Under my watch, new teams would be added in Charlotte for the National League and Portland for the American League. The Milwauke Brewers would then move back to the American League, giving two 16 team leagues. The two leagues would then go to four, four team divisions ala the NFL. The alignment is below.

AL East
Baltimore
Boston
NY Yankees
Tampa Bay

AL North
Cleveland
Detroit
Milwaukee
Toronto

AL Midwest
CHI White Sox
Kansas City
Minnesota
Texas

AL West
LA Angels
Oakland
Portland
Seattle

NL East
NY Mets
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Washington

NL North
CHI Cubs
Cincinnati
Colorado
St. Louis

NL South
Atlanta
Charlotte
Florida
Houston

NL West
Arizona
LA Dodgers
San Diego
San Francisco

The playoffs would be the same three rounds, but with no more wild card. Division winnerso nly would go to the postseason.

3. World Series Home Field Decided by Record

This whole All-Star game decides home field advantage stuff is complete crap. Seriously, how can an exhibition game influence the World Series? Return the all-star game to the way it was, but this time, don't allow ties!!!

4. Any game rained out before nine innings are played is suspended and continued at a later date.

This rule is now in place for the playoffs, but I'd change it to all year round. That way, there's no more rain shortened wins and every game is played out to its completion.

5. Make World Baseball Classic a permanent every four years fixture and allow any countries to qualify. Have each continetal zone conduct a qualifying tournament the year before (ala the World Cup) and rotate the site of the tournament to different countries, also like the World Cup. Hold the tournament in late February and early March.

This is tough one, but I would love to see the WBC turn into a World Cup-esque style tournament. Globalize the game and try to get more countries involved. Also, there's really no better time to hold the tournament than during spring training. Sorry to the owners and all, but it's the only conceivable time of year.
