NFL Tournament of Champions: Second Round, Groups Three and Four

The NFL Tournament of Champions second roudn wraps up today with groups three and four.


2000 Baltimore Ravens 19, 1994 San Francisco 49ers 14
At Candlestick Park
Player of the Game: QB Tony Banks BAL: 14 of 26 179 yards one touchdown,

The Ravens jumpe out to an early 19-6 lead en route to a victory over the '94 49ers at Candlestick. Tony Banks found Brandon Stokley for a touchdown pass, the only TD on the afternoon for the Ravens. The 49ers offense was stymied by the Raven defense and held to just four field goals and a late San Fran safety. Baltimore also got four field goals from Matt Stover.


1991 Washington Redskins 43, 1983 Los Angeles Raiders 17
At Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
Player of the Game: QB Mark Rypien WSH: 19 of 27 367 yards four touchdowns

In a blowout at L.A. the '91 Redskins blitzed the '83 Raiders for 43 points in an easy win over Los Angeles. Mark Rypien has a career day, throwing for four touchdown passes, three of which went to Art Monk, thr fourth going to Joe Johnson. Jim Plunkett threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns passes for the Raiders, but it wasn't enough to overcome the bad defense from L.A.


1949 Philadelphia Eagles 31, 1992 Dallas Cowboys 20
At Shibe Park
Player of the Game: RB Emmitt Smith DAL: 26 carries 149 yards one touchdown, two catches 71 yards one touchdown


The '49 Eagles jumped out to an early 21-0 lead on the '92 Cowboys and cruise from their to a 31-20 win at Shibe Park. Steve Van Buren ran for two touchdowns and Tommy Thompson threw for another two scores for the victorios Eagles. Emmitt Smith had over 200 total yards and both touchdowns for Dallas, who fell short in a second half coemback.


1996 Green Bay Packers 13, 1985 Chicago Bears 7
At Soldier Field
Player of the Game: QB Brett Favre GB: 20 of 33 248 yards one touchdown

In a tight defensive battle at Soldier Field, two field goals were the difference as the '96 Packers edged out the '85 Bears 13-7. Brett Favre found Robert Brooks for the Packers lone touchdown. Dennis Gentry ran for the Bears only touchdown as they had only 149 total yards of offense in the game, inlcuding just 23 passing yards.


1973 Miami Dolphins 6, 1950 Clevelan Browns 0
At Cleveland Municipal Stadium
Player of the Game: LB Larry Ball MIA: six tackles one sack one interception

In a sloppy battle in a rainy Cleveland, the '73 Dolphins won their second straight game without scoring a touchdown, shutting out the tough 1950 Browns. Garo Yepremin's two field goals were all the scoring for Miami, who sacked Otto Graham six times and picked him off twice. Neither quarterback threw for more than 100 yards and no running back ha more than 50 yards rushing.


1969 Kansas City Chiefs 16, 1975 Pittsburgh Steelers 14
At K.C. Municipal Stadium
Player of the Game: RB Franco Harris PIT: 19 carries 83 yards two touchdowns, three catches 26 yards

In an exicting second round battle, the '75 Steelers saw a 13 point comeback fall short as the Chiefs won the game on a 26 yard Jan Stenerud field goal for the win. Up 13-0 in the third quarter, two Franco Harris touchdowns gave the Steelers a 14-13 lead before a late Chief drive instituted by Len Dawson set up Stenerud for the winning field goal .


1978 Pittsburgh Steelers 27, 1951 Los Angeles Rams 7
At Three Rivers Stadium
Player of the Game: QB Terry Bradshaw PIT: 14 of 24 156 yards two touchdowns

In a dominant Steel Curtain-like performance at Three Rivers, the '78 Steelers easily dismantled the outmatched '51 Rams. Terry Bradshaw threw two touchdown passes, one each to Lynn Swann and John Stallworth to lead the Steelers, and Rocky Bleir added a rushing score. Norm Van Brocklin found Tom Fears for the only Rams score.


1980 Oakland Raiders 33, 2007 New York Giants 16
At Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum
Player of the Game: QB Jim Plunkett OAK: 12 of 19 206 yards two touchdowns

The Raiders put up 20 points in the second quarter an jumpe out to a 27-10 lead by the third quarter, guiding them to a win. Jim Plunkett threw two touchdown passes, one each to Cliff Branch and Dave Casper in the second, and Lester Hayes returned an interception 86 yards for a touchdown. Eli Manning's lone TD pass came with just 16 seconds left, a menaingless score.

Two teams that barely escaped the first two rounds will do battle at the Orange Bowl, where one of the very solid defenses will have to give.

1978 Pittsburgh Steelers at 1980 Oakland Raiders
A late 70's rivalry is renewe as the Raiders led by Jim Plunkett will host the dominating Steel Curtain of the '78 Steelers.
