At Shibe Park
Player of the Game: WR Torry Holt STL: four catches 84 yards
In a brutal semifinal battle at Shibe Park, it was the defenes of the '99 Rams and the leg of Jeff Wilkins that guided them to victory. The Eagles did not have much of a problem moving the football, but two key turnovers in the Rams side of the field killed them. Wilkins booted four field goals for all of the St. Louis scoring as the offense avoided turning the ball over.
1991 Washington Redskins 13, 1978 Pittsburgh Steelers 3
At Three Rivers Stadium
Player of the Game: QB Mark Rypien 15 of 28 167 yards one touchdown
In another tough defensive game at Three Rivers, the '91 Redskins buckled down and defeated the favored '78 Steelers. Mark Rypien found Ricky Sanders for the games only touchdown to break a 3-3 tie in the third quarter. Pittsburgh's only offense was a Roy Gerala field goal as they limped throughout the game. The win set up an all-90's final at RFK.
1991 Washington Redskins 17, 1999 St. Louis Rams 6
At RFK Stadium
Player of the Game: RB Ricky Ervins: nine carries 12 yards two touchdowns
For the second straight game, the '91 Redskins defense buckled down and stopped the Greatest Show on Turf, winning the NFL Tournament of Champions at home. Ricky Ervins only ran for 18 yards, but scored both Washington touchdowns that made the difference in the game. St. Louis managed just two field goals and 178 yards of offense. Mark Rypien received the MVP award of the tournmanet after guiding the Skins to the Championship.
