I'll be honest from the start today, this whole talking about the Flyers losing thing is getting old. Another winless week capped off by an embarrassment against Florida on Monday got me to thinking of how many things the Flyers have done wrong lately. There you go, everything you need to know about the Flyers in a nutshell.
My Flyers Picks this week
Last Week- 2-1
Season 7-4
So when will this losing streak end? With no Boucher the next couple nights, the Fly guys turn to Michael Leighton, who lasted played goal for the team in the season that shall not be named. Looks like he plays the next two nights. Look for Philly to get scorched in Tampa Bay. Carolina will be a matchup of the two worst teams in the NHL (who would've thought that last April?) Throw the Canes a bone....that's right, I take Carolina in an upset over the Flyers. Don't worry, we play the Islanders Sunday and we NEVER lose to the Isles....right? Easy victory over Tavares and company.
Wed. at Tampa Bay LOSS
Sat. at Carolina LOSS
Sun. at NY Islanders WIN
Across the NHL divisions....
Atlantic- Are the Devils the class of the division and league right now? They absolutely destroyed the Penguins as Martin Brodeur set the all-time NHL shutout record. Major thumbs up to arguably the greatest goalie of all-time and a first ballot Hall of Famer down the road. As an add-on, the answer for me is yes, New Jersey is better than Pittsburgh.
Northeast- Completely not hockey related, but Ottawa's Mike Fisher is engaged to Carrie Underwood. Bummer for all of us who dreamed of exchanging vows with Carrie down the road (*cough* Tony Romo *cough*)
Southeast- One thing that Monday's game vs. Florida did rather than make me puke was see how solid of a player Nathan Horton is. To be honest, I did not know barely anything about him but then again no one can name a Panther player other than Tomas Vokoun and Jay Bowmeester (wait, Bowmeester isn't it Florida??? Ok). Horton along with Stephen Weiss were impressive and danced around the Flyers defense all night. Then again, a team of chimpanzees on skates could do the same thing.
Central- There's tons of hockey on tonight as it's the final night of games before the two day Christmas break, but if you're sick of watching your home team and are lucky enough to get NHL Network, tune into Chicago-Detroit at 7:30. A good Original Six rivalry, the continuation of a changing of the guard in the division from the Red Wings and Blackhawks, and with all the Detroit injuries, you AHL fans get to see half of the Grand Rapids Griffins take the ice!!
Northwest- Remember Pavol Demitra? Yeah, I thought he retired too. Apparently, though, he is currently on the Vancouver Canucks, rehabbing from a torn rotator cuff injury sustained in training camp. A six week injury (according to rotowire) has now been about three months and he STILL isn't cleared to play. Once back, he can be a difference maker for Vancouver in a tough Northwest Division.
Pacific- I love watching an extremely competitive Pacific Division, the best by far in the league. Phoenix, in it's chase after the Kings atop the division, have recalled young Kevin Porter, who is apparently tearing up the AHL down in San Antonio. He won the Hobey Baker Award in 2008 at Michigan. Today is the first I've heard of him, but try to catch a glimpse of him tonight. He should be in the lineup when the Coyotes host Anaheim tonight. The game is a 9:00 start and will be streamed live on Yahoo Sports.
