Christmas: No Matter What Way We Spin It, It's All About Love

Isn't this exciting? It's officially Christmas Eve, outside of the Hawaii Bowl between SMU and Nevada tonight, there's no sports to speak of today, and for the first time in a long time, I'm posting something that isn't sports!!

I'll be the first to admit, Christmas is my SECOND favorite holiday. Why isn't my favorite? Well, Thanksgiving takes the cake because in my mind, Thanksgiving hasn't lost its meaning, unlike Christmas, which is now stretched over what seems to be nearly a two to three month period.

However, when I take a look as the holiday as a whole, and I sit down and think things over, all of this greed, the excessive money spending and present buying, driving hectically around malls, decorating our houses like crazy people, is this all necessarily a bad thing? I say no, to an extent.

All of these what are so called "commercial" aspects of Christmas aren't necessarily tied with the evils of our world, rather, there is a vast number of people who go with these things for all the right reasons.

Take a minute to yourself and think of this: what are you motives behind buying gifts, decorating your house, cooking lots of food, and spending lots of money. Are you doing it because you WANT something in return, or are you doing it out of love?

The key to Christmas ultimately lies in your answer to this, which can be found in your heart. Ultimately, people tend to forget the religious origins of this holiday, found in Christianity. On Christmas, Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and the hope and joy he brought to our world as he came down to earth. Jesus, in his life, never performed miracles or preached to get something back from people, he did it out of love.

Now, I ask everyone, regardless of religious background and beliefs, to look upon themselves and ask, why am I involved with all this Christmas madness. Am I doing all this just so people will be happy with me, or am I doing this to make people happy? We all know the correct answer here, but you have to find it in your heart to do things for all the right reasons.

To me, it doesn't matter what your religious is, what your race, ethnic background, gender, all of that doesn't matter. Any of us can practice this because, as humans, we learn to love ourselves and love one another. The holiday season is the perfect time to make a change, look at ourselves, and determine, can we do more for others? Love is by far the most powerful bond any two humans can share. Put yourself in Jesus' shoes, and ask yourself, do we love everyone, with our whole hearts, minds and souls, the way Jesus did. Take this Christmas to reflect on yourself, and practice loving others more. I guarantee, it'll be one of the best holidays you have ever experienced.

Seeing as this is my last post before Christmas, I would like to wish everyone, from my family to my friends to any other readers out there, a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. I hope everyone is able to have the best holiday they have ever experienced.

Thank you for reading and God bless.
